Circumscription - A Form of Non-Monotonic Reasoning

چکیده

Humans and intelligent computer programs must often jump to the conclusion that the objects they can determine to have certain properties or relations are the only objects that do. Circumscription formalizes such conjectural reasoning.

Description Logics with Circumscription

We show that circumscription can be used to extend description logics (DLs) with non-monotonic features in a straightforward and transparent way. In particular, we consider extensions with circumscription of the expressive DLsALCIO and ALCQO and prove that reasoning in these logics is decidable under a simple restriction: only concept names can be circumscribed, and role names vary freely durin...

Is Intractability of Non-Monotonic Reasoning a Real

Several studies about complexity of NMR showed that inferring in non-monotonic knowledge bases is significantly harder than reasoning in monotonic ones. This contrasts with the general idea that NMR can be used to make knowledge representation and reasoning simpler, not harder. In this paper we show that, to some extent, NMR has fulfilled its goal. In particular we prove that circumscription al...

Non-monotonicity in probabilistic reasoning

We start by defining an approach to non-monotonic prob abilistic reasoning in terms of non-monotonic categorical reasoning. We identify a type of non-monotonic proba bilistic reasoning, akin to default inheritance, that seems to be commonly found in practice. We formulate this in terms of the Maximization of Conditional Independence (MCI), and identify a variety of applications for this sort ...

Non-monotonic Inference

Non-monotonic inference is inference that is defeasible: in contrast with deductive inference, the conclusions drawn may be withdrawn in the light of further information, even though all the original premises are retained. Much of our everyday reasoning is like this, and a non-monotonic approach has applications to a number of technical problems in artificial intelligence. Work on formalizing n...

On Reducing Parallel Circumscription

Three levels of circumscription have been proposed by McCathy to formalize common sense knowledge and non-monotonic reasoning in general-purpose database and knowledge base systems. That is, basic circumscription, parallel circumscription, and priority circumscription. Basic circumscription is a special case of parallel circumscription while parallel circumscription is a special case of priorit...
